Description
Whaleback Lighthouse during the morning blue hour on a frigidly cold New Years Day morning in 2016. This historic lighthouse marks the mouth of the Piscataqua River between New Castle, NH and Kittery, ME. It was established in 1820, replaced in 1829, upgraded again in 1855 and then replaced again in 1872 after storms caused cracks in the tower and foundation. The 1872 lighthouse is still standing today in part because of its dovetailed granite block construction. It's light shines two white flashes every ten seconds from its 59ft (18m) perch. Today this historic lighthouse is owned and operated by the American Lighthouse Foundation and its chapter Friends of the Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouses.
